Listen Club: For Long Distance Lovers

  • The Rose Hill 70 Rose Hill Terrace Brighton, England, BN1 4JL United Kingdom (map)

Wednesday 15th May | 7pm | Free tickets

Our free monthly listening session brought to you by Sound Art Brighton.

Listen Club is about pulling off your headphones and listening together in the same space. Each of these events is an adventure for your ears, all are welcome and its a relaxed vibe, so if you have never been, we recommend trying it out! It is a sitting in silence listening session though so be prepared for that…

In this edition of Listen Club, Ed Baxter will play a range of his radio works bringing the listener impossibly close to faraway beings and the uncanny space between our interior and exterior perception.

Here’s what he is saying about the selection:

“The epoch of nonsense, our epoch, can begin.” Friedrich A. Kittler

Two strangers fall in love in a modernist romance of telecommunications. A wrinkled voice walks a performative tightrope traversing consciousness itself. Vocaloids slavishly recount the history of radio via an angelic message to expectant shepherds. A Scream Hot Line opens for people to vent. A rock climber reveals the source of a secret high. A baby cries. And 500 primary school children realise a Chinese Whisper. Come with us - up, down, in and out of the radio art cosmos!

Now abit about the brilliant guest curator Ed Baxtor …. He is a radio artist and associate lecturer at the London College of Communication, where he teaches Sound Art. He was the co-founder, with Phil England, of Resonance FM and stepped down from his role as its CEO this year. With Chris Weaver he won a BASCA “Composer of the Year” award in 2103 for the audio element of NVA’s “Speed of Light” at Edinburgh International Festival. He has also been a concert and festival producer, bookseller, typesetter, publisher, script writer, installation artist, and co-editor of the Works of Thomas De Quincey.
