A unique opportunity to hear 'cante jondo' by Brighton's very own Dunia Flamenco. A full sensory experience: understand the poetry, listen to the song (cante), hear the guitar and percussion (toque) and experience the dance (zapateado). Our second performance in the second year of The Mehfil Space events at The Rose Hill! Committed to offering quality music with roots from South Asia, The Mehfil Space @mehfilspace is delighted to bring you these five artists.
This special performance for The Mehfil Space by Dunia Flamenco draws connections between south Asian classical music and flamenco - honouring the roots and routes of the two musical art-forms. Brighton-based artists with links to Spain, India, Pakistan and Malaysia will present an evening in the true spirit of the "Mehfil": a gathering where music and poetry is performed for a small audience in an intimate space.
As the nights draw in, the audience is invited to reach the 'rasa' through the 'cante jondo' - the 'deep song' that encompasses several flamenco styles which evoke an intense strength of feeling through the music. The poetry and lyrics will be interpreted by local poet, Dulani Kulasinghe before they are sung by Martin Paredes, with Fergusito on flamenco guitar, Sudhi on tabla and cajon, and Wafa on dance.
Every concert becomes a collaborative dialogue, with all artists collectively shaping the musical journey.
This event by The Mehfil Space Community Interest Company @mehfilspace, set up by local curator Atiya Gourlay, is collaborating with the Brighton community arts venue, The Rose Hill.
